![]() A total of 50 sentient species in all have been contacted, with each being rated at various levels of development. This began with first contact with the Fraal in the Sol System, followed by the brutish Weren, cybernetically enhanced Mechalus, reptilian T'sa, and gliding Sesheyan. In the course of the past five centuries, humans have contacted several alien races. This agreement has held the peace, barely, for the last three decades. The war ended in 2472 with the signing of the Treaty of Concord. The war continued for over 100 years, leaving worlds devastated and nations and alliances in difficult financial straits. ![]() This led to a pullback of the humans from their maximum expansion, isolating many colonies. Tensions between the colonies led to the first galactic war in 2299, finally ending in 2312 with the emergence of 26 stellar nations.Ī second, even nastier war began in 2346, sparked by a rebellion of mutants. New powers emerged, forming the Terran Empire in 2250. A period of stellar colonization of habitable worlds ensues, led by six wealthy power blocs. Mankind has gained access to faster-than-light technology called the stardrive, a merger of technology between humans and the alien Fraal. For fun: I like the idea of the costumes being “turned up to Liberace’ 11.” Wonderful mental image.Star Drive is set in the 26th century, starting in the year 2501. To the future: I dont’ want to be a downer, but while there is no more Ben Steed, there’s still Tanith Lee coming up…ħ. Speaking of story arc, I still think having to regain what has been lost is a nice, meaningful thing for the show to do, and should make it kind of easy to map out the episodes as they are being created (?)Ħ. glad you mentioned this, as it “may” be a bit of this seasons story arc…ĥ. Perhaps pronouncing a Brit’s surname as if it were French could be construed as a kind of insult? Perhaps Eugene was intending that? □Ĥ. Making “Atlan” “not really one of the spacerats” seems like a way of making the bad guy more interesting, and also leaving room for him to be some king of recurring villian… Follet did this with the bald dwarf from “Dawn of the Gods”, so maybe it’s just a thing that he does.ģ. A good episode for laughs, some good ideas and some poor execution… I can still enjoy it well enough.Ģ. I wish I had a time machine, so I could go back and tell my 1980-self, “Whatever it is that makes you think Soolin is ‘interesting’, you are deeply, deeply mistaken.” Replyġ. Overall, it’s a big dumb episode, but I have fun rewatching it (mainly due to Atlan’s bug-eyed performance), so I give it a pass. Villa uses his evasive skills to the maximum and has survived. You gave some stick to Vila over what a useless, drunken coward he is, yet Vila survives! Gan: dead. Why hasn’t Dr Plaxton organised a nasty radiation leak to kill all the Space Rats late one night? She’s got the Mk.1 drive, does she really need all their grief? Just-so-you-know, Follet is pronounced with a hard-T, or else multiple BBC radio announcers have been lying to me over the years. No explosives, just some unconvincing video effects and pratfalls for Avon’s getaway grenade.Ĭonclusion: I can’t tell whether the budget ran out or the production staff simply gave up caring. The Space Rat who captured Dayna and Vila appears to be armed with a videogame pistol.Ĥ. The Federation Pursuit ships on the rear viewscreen at the episode’s end appear to be video of poorly-formed blobs of orange PlayDoh.ģ. The flame/frills adornments on the Space Rats’ helmets are quite clearly cardboard, coloured-in with crayon.Ģ. Avon prematurely activates the drive, causing it to fire instantly when Dr. Plaxton, using the force wall air bubble, installs the photonic drive in Scorpio, but the pursuit ships launch plasma bolts. Their luck doesn’t hold, and three more pursuit ships are on an intercept course. After much rambling around, Avon and gang manage to spring her and the photonic drive. Plaxton is working for them, but is increasingly unhappy with the arrangement. They track her down to the planet of the Space Rats, a nasty, brutish version of a punk rock motorcycle gang. Also, clearly, she is not working for the Federation any more. Plaxton, formerly a Federation engine designer, has perfect the photonics drive, AKA the StarDrive. It almost works, but the pursuit ships are getting too close – and then suddenly, they explode, allowing the Scorpio to return to base.Īnalysis of the recording reveals that a small space hopper blasted through and destroyed the pursuit ships at an unbelievable Standard X 12.6 in real space, something that should be impossible. Vila suggests that a force wall could be used to pressurize the engine compartment, allowing Avon and Tarrant to effect the repairs. oh, and there’s a squadron of Federation pursuit ships coming dangerously close to them. The engines need a part replaced, but the engine compartment isn’t pressurized.
